Center of Media and Information Literacy

It was established in October 2017 by the Department of Journalism and Philology of Sumy State University.

The Center of Media and Information Literacy was created with the aim of elaboration of the educational media platform for information literacy for the north-eastern regions of Ukraine (mainly Poltava, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions).

The target audience is journalism students and students majoring in other fields as well.

The task of the Center is to develop the ability of a young person:

  • to properly “read” media texts;
  • to perceive and reasonably evaluate media information;
  • to create and transmit media texts of various forms and genres;
  • to analyze complex processes of media functioning in society;
  • to think independently and critically;
  • to express yourself and to communicate with the help of media technologies;
  • to separate reality from its virtual simulation, created by media sources;
  • to understand political and social myths, as well as government manipulation strategies and myths;
  • to aesthetically assess media texts;
  • to integrate acquired knowledge and skills, perceiving and analysing the information.

The ways of implementing tasks:

  • creating of media education library for students, experts and general public;
  • development of specialized electronic academic publications on media literacy;
  • regular trainings, seminars and conferences for interested students;
  • development of the program on media and information literacy for students of non-humanitarian faculties and testing it at Sumy State University;
  • development of media and information literacy program electronic resources;
  • creation of an internal institutional network for media environment and media literacy;
  • development of television and radio programs on media literacy, broadcasting them to local media.
